Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911; from a young age he felt a strong religious vocation that led him to enter the cloistered monastery of Pietrasanta, where he stayed for three years pursuing philosophical studies, before dedicating himself as a self-taught artist to artistic research, which would lead him to exhibit in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad.
A man of faith, he believed that only through art could one reach the divine. And this thought would underpin all his work: "I try to make the void – Gentilini declared – This void provokes in me a certain catharsis: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I reevaluate them, but I never know how I will fall into the painting, and this is the realization of a truth toward the sign never thought."
He was an artist practicing asceticism, to imitate the Saint to whom he was devoted. The two natures, the human and the aesthetic, coincide perfectly.
