Brass olive-oil lamp from Portugal, estimated to date to 1850–1900, a functional 19th‑century lighting piece.
Description from the seller
Oil lamp (candela) typically Portuguese from the 19th century, early 20th century. Fully functional.
Manufactured entirely in brass, this lamp was used to light homes, frequently using lower-quality oil or oil not fit for consumption. It contains the original utensils necessary for its operation, suspended by chains (as seen in the photos), which serve to insert the wicks, pull the wicks, and remove the morrões, to extinguish (funnel) and a small container for morrões.
This piece has been rigorously cleaned and the brass polished and brightened. It is in good condition despite being over 100 years old, and is fully functional, already equipped with new wicks and ready to be used or displayed. Its light, soft and flickering, is very relaxing, recreating atmospheres from other times.
• Material: Brass
• Condition: Excellent / Functional (with wicks included)
• Number of spouts: 3 spouts
• Height: ~36 cm
• Width/Base diameter: ~13 cm
• Weight: 730 g
The photos are part of the description. Shipping will be done with protective and insured packaging, with tracking number. About 1 meter of cotton wick will be sent for future replacement.
Warning (in addition to normal care with flames):
- Never use synthetic material wicks, nylon, polyester or acrylic. Only natural fiber wicks may be used, such as cotton, linen, hemp or jute.
- Liquid paraffin does not work in these wick lamps. Cooking oils, unlike oil, produce fumes and the smell of burnt oil.
- Monitor the oil levels; without oil the wicks burn, producing fumes and an unpleasant smell.
