Lamp - Brass

A typically Portuguese brass oil lamp from the 19th century, early 20th century. Fully functional.

Wholly made of brass, this lamp was used to light homes, often employing lower-quality olive oil or oil not suitable for consumption. It includes the original utensils needed for its operation, hung by chains (as seen in the photos), and used to insert the wicks, to pull the wicks and remove the wick crusts, to extinguish (snuffer) and a small container for the wick crusts.

This piece has been rigorously cleaned and the brass polished and brightened. It is in good condition despite its age of over 100 years, and is fully functional, already equipped with new wicks and ready to be used or displayed. Its light, soft and flickering, is very relaxing, recreating atmospheres of bygone times.

Warning (in addition to the usual care with flames):

- Never use wicks made of synthetic materials, nylon, polyester or acrylic. Only natural-fiber wicks may be used, such as cotton, linen, hemp or jute.
- Liquid paraffin does not work in these wick lamps. Edible oils, unlike olive oil, produce fumes and a smell of burnt oil.
- Monitor olive oil levels; without oil the wicks burn, producing fumes and an unpleasant odor.
