Antique freestanding nightstand in solid walnut with Renaissance design, dating to 1860–1880, made in Tuscany, Italy, measuring 70 cm high by 62 cm wide by 46 cm deep and weighing 13.8 kg, in good condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
Antique Nightstand “Fratino” in Rustic Walnut – Renaissance Style – Italy, 19th Century
Rare example of a high nightstand crafted in blond walnut wood, typical of the Italian artisanal craftsmanship of the 19th century. Unlike classic closed- drawer nightstands, this piece adopts a “daylight” (open) frame of Renaissance derivation, which makes it visually light yet extremely elegant.
Analysis of the Compartment and Design:
Drop-Front Opening: The most interesting feature is the front. What appears to be a drawer is actually a drop-front (tilt-front) panel (visible in photos DSC_0110 and DSC_0111). When opened, it reveals a spacious interior compartment, perfect for storing personal items.
Cartouche Decorum: The front is embellished with a raised cartouche-form relief with truncated corners, which frames an elegant turned wooden knob.
Support Architecture: The upper body rests on four legs with complex turnings, characterized by a succession of rings and bulbs (balusters). The base is reinforced by a solid perimetral crosspiece that rests on block feet.
Condition:
The piece exudes authenticity. The walnut patina is warm and natural.
Interior: The bottom of the compartment is lined with period floral wallpaper, a touch of domestic care from bygone times.
Signs of Time: There are small woodworm holes (treated and no longer active) and some knocks or wear marks on the base and legs (visible in details DSC_0107 and DSC_0115), which do not compromise stability but certify its age and originality.
