Jose Manuel Mayo Peña presents Peces en el estanque XL, a 2023 oil painting on canvas in a contemporary style, 135 by 90 cm, signed by hand and issued as an original edition from Spain, in good condition.
Description from the seller
With Peces en el estanque, José Manuel Mayo presents a painting where nature ceases to be a recognizable motif and becomes a visual experience. The artist does not seek to reproduce an aquatic landscape, but to capture what remains invisible within it: the movement of the water, the vibration of light, the uncertain depth, and the fleeting presence of the fish beneath a constantly changing surface.
The work is built from a gestural language of notable maturity, where each brushstroke responds both to an expressive need and to a structural one. The composition avoids any dominant center and is organized through a system of chromatic masses that balance with one another. Large fields of deep greens, dark blues, and ochres dialogue with bursts of magentas, oranges, and violets that introduce pulsations of energy without breaking the overall harmony of the whole.
One of the painting’s greatest achievements lies in its treatment of light. Far from depicting it descriptively, Mayo makes it an autonomous compositional element. The broad reserves of light tones traverse the surface like changing reflections on water, generating an atmospheric sense that gives the work depth without resorting to traditional perspective. Light does not illuminate the space; it is the space.
The pictorial gesture reveals absolute confidence in the material language. Glazes, impastos, dragged brushstrokes, and drips coexist without apparent hierarchies, making visible the construction process of the painting. That material honesty places the painting within a contemporary gestural tradition where the act of painting remains present in every inch of the canvas. However, what distinguishes this work from a purely informalist exercise is the clarity with which each intervention occupies a precise place within the balance of the composition.
From a critical reading, Peces en el estanque demonstrates a deep understanding of lyrical abstraction as a territory of evocation rather than negation. Mayo does not eliminate the reference to the natural world; he distills it until it becomes rhythm, color, and visual memory. The viewer perceives the water, the submerged vegetation, the reflections, and the organic forms without needing to find them depicted explicitly. The painting works precisely because it trusts the perceptual capacity of the viewer.
Especially notable is the economy of resources with which the artist achieves notable spatial complexity. The composition avoids the saturation that often accompanies certain contemporary gestural practices and instead bets on a balance between density and pictorial silence. The zones of greatest chromatic intensity always find their counterpoint in open spaces where the viewer can breathe before diving again into the painting’s material richness.
The large format, 135 × 90 cm, amplifies this experience. The scale allows the viewer not only to observe the painting but to become immersed in it. The physical dimension of the gesture takes center stage and turns the visual journey into a bodily experience, where every movement in front of the work reveals new relationships between texture, color, and depth.
Beyond its title, Peces en el estanque does not aim to offer a recognizable image of an aquatic environment. Its true theme is perception: that unstable boundary between what we think we see and what we barely sense beneath the surface. In that ambiguous territory lies the work’s strength. José Manuel Mayo succeeds in transforming a daily scene into a painting investigation about light, movement, and visual memory, showing that abstraction can retain an intense narrative charge without relying on figurative representation.
From a curatorial perspective, this piece evidences a mature painting aware of its own resources. Its apparent spontaneity is the result of a rigorous construction, where gesture, color, and composition are subordinated to a single intention: to transform the canvas into a space of active contemplation, capable of offering new readings each time the viewer faces it again. In this lies the solidity of José Manuel Mayo’s proposal and the reason this work transcends mere abstract exercise to stand among truly dense conceptual and plastic painting.

Seller's Story
