【Product details】

A striking collection of five hand-carved and hand-painted wooden masks from Indonesia, associated with the traditional artistic cultures of Bali and Java.

The masks present a varied group of supernatural beings, theatrical characters and noble or divine figures. Masks of this type are traditionally connected with dance performances, religious ceremonies, storytelling and protective decoration.

The largest mask depicts a fierce supernatural being with a flame-like crown, bulging eyes and an exceptionally long tongue. Its dramatic form recalls figures from the Barong and Rangda traditions.

The white-faced demon mask has prominent round eyes, pointed teeth and a brightly painted headdress, creating an expressive and theatrical appearance.

The red demon mask features movable-looking rounded eyes, large fangs, three raised projections on the forehead and genuine animal hair around the lower edge.

The blue-green bird mask has a long curved beak, a large circular eye and an elaborate pink, red and gold feathered crest. It may represent a divine bird such as Garuda or Jatayu, both important figures in Hindu mythology and Southeast Asian visual culture.

The grey female or noble figure has a calm expression, closed eyes, a decorative forehead ornament, large gold-coloured earrings and a distinctive bow-shaped hairstyle.

The backs retain visible hand-carving and chisel marks. Some masks are fitted with wire or cord for hanging.

The set displays the expressive carving, bold colouring and symbolic imagery associated with Indonesian folk and ceremonial art.

The masks show age-related wear, scratches, dirt, rubbing, small chips and areas of paint loss. The grey female figure has cracking around the mouth and chin. The red demon mask has some loss to the animal hair around the lower edge. The blue-green bird mask has a noticeable crack along the side. Further minor cracks, surface wear and irregularities are present throughout. Please refer to the photos for details.
