Silver gelatin on baryta paper, 15 x 20.8 cm. Vintage. Verso described and mounted in a 24 x 18 cm matboard.
Provenance: Private collection, Hans Kinkel, Duisburg; Private collection, Berlin.

Celebratory today, the Lichtwark Prize was awarded to the painter Max Ernst in the Kaisersaal of the Hamburg Town Hall. The Lichtwark Prize was endowed in 1951 by the Senate and the Bürgerschaft. It is awarded every three years. The total prize money of DM 20,000 is divided into DM 15,000 for the winner (Max Ernst) and DM 5,000 for scholarships. This year the scholarship went to the painter Manfred Grossmann and the sculptor Detlef Birgfeld. Previous prizewinners of the Lichtwark Prize were:
1952 Oskar Kokoschka, 1955 Ernst Wilhelm Nay, 1958 Rolf Nesch, 1961 Werner Gilles.
Max Ernst, born 1891 in Brühl near Cologne, living today in Arizona, is among the fathers of painterly Surrealism.
