1879 the Herzog Circus sought the strongest Bavarian and advertised this action nationwide in Bavaria. Hans Steyrer (1849-1906) won all competitions and, in the end, topped it: with the strength of his right middle finger he was the only one able to lift a 508-pound stone for a few seconds (to lift). Since then he was called "the Bavarian Hercules." A woodcut (19.5 x 19.5 cm) shows this unusual display of strength, here still with a 375-pound stone. - In addition to this appearance, which laid the fame of Hans Steyrer—still unforgettable in Bavaria today—there were also small theater pieces, Mrs. Herzog with a horse number, among others. - Left edge briefly cropped.
