Description from the seller
Bas-relief in repoussé and partially gilded copper, depicting the Annunciation scene. 20th century
Of probable Orthodox/Greek Christian origin, it features various inscriptions in Byzantine Greek, in uncial lettering.
The translation of the inscription along the borders (starting from the left side and proceeding clockwise) would be "Gabriel the Archangel has come - the great [mystery] of God and the announcement - The Angel announced to the wise Mother of God - Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you".
These are liturgical and Gospel verses that describe and celebrate the moment of the Annunciation.
Near the Archangel, between the halo, the falling light and the column, the letters "Γ/Α/Β/PI/Ηλ" appear = Gabriel.
To the left of the Virgin, the letters "Κ/Ε/Mxλ" appear instead, contracted form of Kecharitōmenē = Full of grace.
The gesture of the figures appears ritualized: Gabriel holds his raised hand with the fingers in a specific position in the blessing gesture, while with the left hand he grips the messenger’s staff, symbol of the authority vested in him.
The Virgin raises her left hand upward, signaling the initial distress, while the right hand downward signifies acceptance and the Incarnation.
With certificate of authenticity.
Dimensions: 40 x 30 cm.
Weight: 990 g.
