Interno di Harem, 19th century, pencil drawing, France.
Description from the seller
Author: The inscription at the bottom right explicitly reads "Achille Devéria".
Subject: On the right one reads (Intérieur d'un sérail) (Inner of a seraglio / harem), while on the left the historical-geographic context is specified: "Persia - 19th Century".
Description of the scene: It is an Orientalist composition with a Romantic taste typical of the nineteenth century. The scene depicts female figures in period Persian attire inside a seraglio, with a servant carrying a tray, a figure playing a stringed instrument, and a mother with a child.
2. Achille Devéria (1800–1857)
he was one of the most celebrated painters, draftsmen and lithographers of French Romanticism.
Activity: Very active in Paris within the circle around Victor Hugo, he is famous both for his elegant portraits of the era's great figures (writers, artists and nobles), and for his costume illustrations, historical works and Orientalist/exotic-inspired scenes.
Related projects: Devéria produced several lithographic series devoted to world costumes, history and Orientalist/exotic genre scenes (such as the famous suites on harems and seraglios interiors published around 1830). This sheet seems to be a preparatory ink/pen study destined for engraving or lithographic printing for an illustrated volume.
Works by the artist are present in the most important European museums including the Louvre and worldwide.
Measurements 28 x 34 cm with frame - without frame 29x23 cm.
The frame visible in the photo is included as a courtesy in the auction and does not constitute an integral part of the work, so any damage to the frame will not be a valid reason for claims or cancellation of the order.
