With The Contrabassist, Sergio Zampieri confirms and strengthens the painting language that characterizes the series The Musicians: a continuous dialogue between the human figure and matter, between control of drawing and the energy of gesture.
The immediate striking element is the almost symbiotic relationship between the musician and the double bass. The instrument is not a simple scenic prop, but becomes an extension of the female body. The sinuous lines of the wood and those of the figure chase each other until they merge into a vertical composition of great elegance, capable of conveying balance and emotional tension at the same time.
The choice to realize the figure entirely in oil reveals notable technical mastery. The skin is modeled with soft and credible color transitions, while the face, just barely hidden by the wavy hair, avoids any superfluous description and leaves room for the observer’s imagination. Particularly effective is the contrast with the background, built through metallic acrylic pastes in gold, silver, copper, bronze and pearl white tones. The intense red of the dress constitutes the chromatic fulcrum of the entire composition.
