Description from the seller
Borghese Gladiator Torso – Large plaster cast
Dimensions: Height 95 cm – Width 60 cm – Depth 50 cm
Material: Patinated plaster
A plaster sculpture depicting the famous Borghese Torso, one of the most important representations of classical antiquity.
The work faithfully reproduces the celebrated Hellenistic marble kept at the Vatican Museums, long regarded as an absolute model for the study of anatomy and the human form.
This specimen, of notable size (95 cm), comes from a plaster workshop (gipsoteca) of the last century, precisely at the beginning of the 1900s; it conveys the extraordinary plastic tension of the back, the buttocks, and the musculature, elements that have made the Torso one of the masterpieces most admired in the history of art.
The original sculpture is attributed to the Greek sculptor Apollonius of Athens (1st century BC) and was rediscovered during the Renaissance. The sculpture entered the Borghese family collection, from which its name, universally known, originates. Michelangelo regarded it as an unsurpassable work and even refused to fill in the missing parts, believing that its expressive force lay precisely in its incompleteness. The Torso profoundly influenced artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Rubens, Canova, and numerous 19th-century sculptors.
Large plaster casts like this were made for academies of fine arts, sculpture studios, and private collections, where they served as indispensable tools for the study of drawing, modeling, and artistic anatomy.
The work presents the natural materiality of plaster and the charm of traditional high-quality educational blends. Ideal as a decorative element for interiors, both classical and contemporary, professional studios, galleries, and collections dedicated to ancient art.
Dimensions: 95 × 60 × 50 cm
Material: plaster.
Condition: good overall condition, with slight signs of age compatible with the material's age and nature.
Packing and shipping are carried out in a dedicated manner.
