Gerard Nijland (1931) - Stadsgezicht

Gerard (Gerrit) Nijland, born in 1931 in Rotterdam, is a Dutch painter who makes both abstract and figurative works. He studied with Simon Kramer and later lived in Paris, the United States, Australia, and New Caledonia, before returning to the Netherlands in 1975.

His abstract paintings are characterized by a strong sense of line, mathematical structures, and harmonious color combinations that evoke tension and depth. In contrast, his figurative works – such as church interiors and winter landscapes – show a realistic approach with attention to mood and detail.
