AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Burmese Buddhist Novice – Temple Figure

Myanmar (Burma), 20th century
Wood, gilded and polychromed

A large depiction of a Buddhist novice carved from wood, with original gilding and colored finish. The richly ornamented robe is decorated with fine relief patterns and features decorative inlays of colored glass, as is typical for high-quality Burmese temple figures of the 19th century.

The calm, dignified expression, harmonious proportions, and meticulous craft give the figure an extraordinary presence. With age-related cracks from drying, signs of wear, and patina.

In the base there are several old fastening holes, which suggest that the figure was originally mounted firmly on an altar, podium, or in a temple niche.

The figure shows old restoration traces, age-related cracks from drying, and minor bumps. Overall, considering its age and original use, it is in good and collectible preservation, as visible in the photographs.

Dimensions: 90 × 30 × 26 cm

Provenance: Estate of a Swiss private collection.
