Inkwell - Wood

Special decorative hand-carved wooden ink box or desk ink pot, made from a solid piece of wood in the natural shape of a tree stump. The object is richly adorned with beautiful woodcarving of flowers, leaves and a mountain landscape and bears the hand-carved inscription "Anno 1914".
Based on the design, the artisanal woodcarving, the natural patina and the construction, this object likely originates from the Alpine region (southern Germany, Switzerland or Austria). The style closely aligns with the well-known Black Forest tradition, which from the late 19th century was beloved for its exceptional craftsmanship and naturalistic woodcarving.
The hollowed interior still contains original dark blue ink residues, an authentic sign of use indicating that the object was indeed used as an ink box or desk ink pot. It is probable that the cavity originally housed a removable glass or ceramic ink pot, which has been lost over time.
Although the exact date of manufacture cannot be determined with certainty, the materials used, the handmade craftsmanship, the natural aging of the wood, the patina and the signs of use present suggest it may be an antique object, likely produced at the beginning of the 20th century (ca. 1900–1925).
