AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

THERE IS ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD - EDITION 1/1

With this square-format work, Medsan revisits Katsushika Hokusai's most famous masterpiece, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, blending the legendary print with a Vans Old Skool sneaker. The shoe emerges from the foam like a vessel riding the swell, while Mount Fuji looms in the distance, tiny and unmoving.

The treatment transposes the ukiyo-e line into a pictorial material carved in paint: thick oil impastos, foam crests modeled in relief, a chromatic range of Prussian blues and cream whites. Hokusai's swirling waves naturally extend along the flank of the Vans, whose iconic side stripe reads as a horizon line. The cartouche メドサン signs the work.

The piece brings into dialogue two worlds separated by three centuries: Edo-era Japan and California skate-and-surf culture. The same energy runs through them—the movement, the foam, the suspended moment before the wave falls again. The sneaker, carried by the ocean, becomes a mythic object.

A graphic and powerful piece, ideal for adding a maritime, timeless touch to a contemporary collector's interior who loves Japanese art and sneaker culture.

About the Studio:
Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists united around a living, plural contemporary creation. Established as a true center of artistic production, the studio operates both as a collective and through individual approaches, depending on the projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. Alongside him, Medsan focuses on pop art painting, exploring color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo engages in a more instinctive search, blending abstract art, outsider art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, created, and followed within the atelier, with a shared artistic standard and a distinct identity for each artist.
