With this square-format work, Medsan covers the absolute icon of DC Comics — Gotham’s Batman — with a rain of neon tags, colliding the myth of the Dark Knight with the raw energy of street art.

The treatment plays on the contrast between an almost hyper-real rendering of the thoughtful character, with hand tucked under the chin, and the neon graffiti running across his armor: pink, cyan, acid yellow, electric green. “GOTHAM,” “JOKE,” “FEAR,” “NIGHT,” “JUSTICE” respond to each other like a stream of consciousness, while the workshop claws of MEDSAN and POPSAN slip among the inscriptions. The dark background, speckled with splashes, isolates the silhouette like a wall of shadow.

Beyond the wink, the piece literally writes on the hero the duality that haunts him: justice and fear, order and night, light and darkness. The Gothic guardian of Gotham is repainted in the colors of the street he roams — the myth descended from the roof to the pavement.
