With this square-format work, Medsan elevates Pikachu, the world-famous Pokémon icon, to the status of a sacred figure, inscribing it in a monumental engraving in the manner of Gustave Doré.

The rendering adopts the full vocabulary of 19th-century engraving: absolute black-and-white, tight hatching and fine lines that sculpt a stormy sky lit by flashes and jagged mountains. Perched on a rocky peak, Pikachu unleashes lightning, while below a crowd raises their eyes, struck by fear and veneration — a direct echo of the great scenes of Romantic sublime and Doré’s biblical illustrations, from Moses to the Flood. The cartouche メドサン signs the work.

The whole essence of the piece lies in the juxtaposition: the tiniest, most adorable creature of pop culture becomes a lightning-struck deity, an object of cult and terror. Medsan playfully questions our relationship to contemporary icons raised to the rank of modern myths.
