With this square-format artwork, Medsan reinterprets Henry Fuseli's Nightmare (1781), substituting No-Face (Kaonashi), the enigmatic spirit from Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, for a mashup that is both gothic and poetic.

The treatment follows the original's romantic chiaroscuro: dark oil, heavy drapery, a pale moon at the window. The composition faithfully echoes Fuseli — the sleeper tipped sideways across the bed, arm hanging, and the spectral horse bursting from the curtains, the "mare" that gives night-mare its name. But on the young woman’s chest, instead of the incubus, No-Face spills a cascade of gold coins. The cartouche メドサン signs the scene.

The work transforms Fuseli’s anxiety into a fable about greed. No-Face’s gold, that poisonous generosity that swallows those who accept it, pours forth like a weight pressing down on the sleeper. Desire and fear, themes of the original painting, become here a meditation on loneliness and the emptiness that money can never fill.

A troubling and refined piece, ideal for bringing a dreamy and mysterious touch to a contemporary interior of a collector who loves old painting and Ghibli culture.
