With this vertically formatted work, Medsan turns Squirtle, the adorable Water-type Pokémon, into a Godzilla-like giant kaiju, ravaging a traditional Japanese village in a thunderstorm.

The treatment draws from Japanese printmaking and vintage posters: black ink outlines, an amber sky striped with lightning, rain lashing down, and dark clouds worked into swirls. Down below, thatched roofs collapse into the rising waters, a torii gate emerges from the flood, while the little turtle advances, looking almost mournful at the damage it’s causing. The vertical cartouche メドサン signs the piece in the upper left corner.

All the charm of the piece arises from the contrast: the cutest creature in the Pokémon bestiary takes on the role of the destructive monster from Japanese cinema. Medsan plays mischievously with scale and the kaiju myth, this ancestral fear of catastrophe transformed into a heartwarming pop fable.
