With this vertically oriented artwork, Medsan reinterprets Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night by weaving in the silhouette of DC Comics’ Batman, creating a mashup between a post-impressionist masterpiece and a superhero myth.

The treatment adopts the language of mosaic: thousands of tesserae compose the famous swirls of the sky, the luminous stars, and the blazing cypress, enhanced by gold tesserae that make the entire surface vibrate. In the foreground, in a wheat field that nods to Wheat Field with Crows, Batman stands with his back to us, cape spread, gazing at the sleeping village. The cartouche メドサン signs the work.

The piece marries Van Gogh’s visionary melancholy with Gotham’s solitary guardian. Two nocturnal figures respond to one another: the tormented painter and the solitary hero, both watchmen beneath a sky in fusion. The mosaic, a technique of the sacred and of eternity, elevates this dialogue to the rank of icon.
