"À Feu Doux" takes place in a Parisian kitchen where everything is simmering and not all of it is in the pot. One woman sits on the marble countertop, barefoot, a wooden spoon in her hand stirring something in a copper pan that she has already forgotten about. The other stands close enough to share the steam, her forehead almost touching, her hand resting where hands rest when they have stopped pretending they are not looking for warmth. They wear white shirts that belong to someone or to no one, unbuttoned enough to let the evening in, the fabric slipping from a shoulder with the slow carelessness of something that was never properly fastened. On the counter behind them a bottle of white wine stands open because someone opened it hours ago and neither remembers who. A loaf of bread has been torn rather than sliced. Peaches sit on a plate untouched. Peonies and daisies crowd a ceramic vase the way flowers crowd a vase when no one has arranged them and they have arranged themselves. Fresh rosemary lies scattered on the marble as if it fell and no one bent to pick it up because bending would have meant stepping away. Through the window the Haussmann facade across the boulevard turns gold in the last light of a day that is ending the same way the wine was opened, slowly, without anyone deciding it should. The gas flame beneath the copper burns low and steady, the kind of heat that takes longer but ruins nothing. Whatever is cooking will be ready when it is ready. There is no rush in this kitchen. There has not been a rush in this kitchen all evening.

The artwork explores themes such as the kitchen as the most intimate room in any home, the quiet tension between proximity and restraint, the beauty of a moment that refuses to accelerate, and the particular warmth that exists between two people who have stopped measuring the distance between them.
