Ramón Borrell i Pla (1876-1963) - Untitled

Ramon Borrell i Pla, Barcelona, 1876-1963) was a Spanish painter and engraver, grouped with the so-called Catalan postmodernism.[1]

Biography
He was the son of painter Pere Borrell del Caso and brother of the equally painter Julio Borrell. He trained at his father's academy and expanded his studies at the School of the Lonja in Barcelona.[2] He was a member of a group of artists who gathered at the tavern El Rovell de l'Ou ('the yolk of the egg'), on Hospital Street in Barcelona, among whom stood out painters Pere Ysern, Mariano Pidelaserra and Josep-Víctor Solà, in addition to sculptor Emili Fontbona and illustrators Cayetano Cornet and Ramón Riera Moliner, most of them students of the Borrell Academy. The group published a handwritten magazine titled Il Tiberio (1896-1898).[3]

He participated in several Exhibitions of Fine Arts in Barcelona between 1894 and 1902. He specialized in horse painting, as well as portraits, with which he achieved great fame. He also dedicated himself to mural painting, notable in this technique for his work in the chapel of Saint John Bosco of the Salesians in Sarrià, the chapel of the Marquesses of Casa Pinzón, and the side walls of the Chapel of the Holy Spirit in the Basilica of Saints Justus and Pastor. He also worked as an engraver, excelling in the design of ex-libris, created in etching. When his father was afflicted by paralysis, he took over directing the family academy.[2]
