Emmanuelle Pellet - Cassis

Through a French door, the port of Cassis unfolds: white boats moored, palm trees swaying their fronds in the southern light, an ornate wrought-iron balustrade. Turquoise shutters, a generous bouquet on the windowsill: the scene evokes those interiors of the Midi that Matisse made unforgettable, where the opening becomes a color field as much as a view of the sea.

But in this Provençal living room slithers an odd little people: a tightrope-walking cat with the tricolor flag, statuesque on its hind paws; a fox with glasses, elegant in his polka-dot shirt, blowing a golden horn; a disheveled bird, with a crest of blue flowers, to the accordion. An improbable brass band, caught in full serenade, between farce and tenderness.

The artist thus embraces the great tradition of Mediterranean windows — its bold plains of color, its ochre and blue light, its architecture of calm — to bring in a very personal imagined world: that of fairy tale and carnival. The line is free, the material generous, the gesture full of humor and vitality.

A work full of wit and color, which transforms a holiday scene into a little facetious theatre — and which, on a wall, will never fail to make those who look at it smile.

About the artist
Historian by training, Emmanuelle Pellet studied at the École du Louvre and then at the Sorbonne before being admitted to the Agrégation of plastic arts (3rd rank). After several years of teaching, she joined the Louvre museum as head of educational outreach.
Her works have been exhibited in galleries in Paris, London, Singapore and Mauritius. They have been the subject of numerous publications and are today in private collections in Europe, North America, Asia and the Indian Ocean.
