Albert Mahieu Trebla (1913-1983) - Surrealist scene with musical notes

A fine impressionist portrait of a young woman, oil painting on paper, measuring 25,7 x 40,7 cm, framed behind museum glass within passepartout in a classical black wooden frame measuring 54,5 x44,5 cm outside size. Signed Albert Trebla. Like many of Trebla´s paintings, the work can be hung from different sides but the horizontal one makes some sense with regards to the musical score.

TREBLA, pseudonym of Albert Mahieu, was a Belgian painter, born in Koksijde in 1913 and died in Veurne in 1983. He was self-taught and debuted as a painter in 1952. What began as a hobby soon grew into his primary occupation. In the third period of his career from 1974 to 1983, he found peace and developed his unmistakable style, and recognition as an artist followed. He won various prizes and exhibitions followed one another in quick succession. For his works, he usually started from a musical motif, an inspiration, or a past event. In his busy, imaginative compositions featuring figures, nudes, animals, and insects, he aligns with the fantastic, the dream, and the magical-realist atmosphere.

His work contains elements of Symbolism, Expressionism, or Surrealism. However, his style is original and unique, inspired by the subconscious, which he himself described as ‘phantasmagie’ (fantastic magic).
He received the Leonardo da Vinci Prize in Florence (Italy), won third prize at the Festival de Bruxelles, and third prize at the Cannes Film Festival (Le Tournoi d’Art). A posthumous exhibition took place at the Oratorio di San Rocco in Fermo (Italy) in 2000. Numerous works by him are located in the city of Veurne, the Museum Bachten de Kupe in Koksijde, the Museum of Religious Art in Ostend, and the cathedral of Chartres.

Condition:Very good, no significant damages or repairs observed. Minor wear to the frame commensurate with age.
