Muntja Nungurrayi - Untitled

Muntja Nungurrayi (c. 1930–1996) was one of the pioneering female artists of the Balgo community in Western Australia and is regarded as an important figure in the development of contemporary Australian Aboriginal art. A senior Kukatja and Wangkatjungka woman, she painted the ancestral Dreaming stories and sacred landscapes of the Great Sandy Desert with the cultural authority of an Elder.

Working through Warlayirti Artists from the mid-1980s onwards, Nungurrayi developed a distinctive visual language characterized by vibrant colours, rhythmic dot work, and bold, expressive compositions. Her paintings often depict important Dreaming narratives, including the Tingari and Seven Sisters stories, translating generations of cultural knowledge into powerful contemporary artworks.

Today, Muntja Nungurrayi's works are held in significant public and private collections and continue to be sought after by collectors worldwide. Her paintings are admired not only for their striking aesthetic qualities but also for the profound cultural heritage and spiritual connection to Country that they embody.
