Four bare birches rise from the water's edge, their trunks mirrored in the still pool below. Behind them, a towering cumulus sky takes up most of the composition — painted wet-in-wet with vigorous, swirling brushwork in blues, greys and warm whites. A band of golden reeds and russet shrubs marks the horizon and catches the light.

Signed "L. Jordaens" in the upper right, in the artist's characteristic flowing hand. Jordaens, born in Merksem and active in Deurne (Antwerp), was the son of the painter Leon Jordaens and known as a born colourist. His landscapes are built on expressive cloud masses and a striking play of light, and he deliberately left human figures out of his compositions — as here, where the trees and sky carry the whole scene. He is listed in Piron's "Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists".

The painting comes in a grey-white painted wooden frame that suits the cool palette well.

Condition: Good
The paint layer is in good condition, with the impasto crisp and intact. The frame shows light wear consistent with age. The reverse has old paper tape along the edges with some age spotting — untouched and consistent with the period. No damage, repairs or restorations observed.
