Angelo Caduto – Patinated terracotta sculpture on a marble base – 20th century
"The work recalls the famous iconography of the Fallen Angel, made famous in the 19th century by Alexandre Cabanel's painting L'Ange Déchu.
A sculpture of great emotional impact depicting a Fallen Angel, realized in patinated terracotta and mounted on an elegant marble base. The work draws inspiration from the celebrated iconography of Lucifer fallen, reinterpreting the moment of maximum psychological tension: not the final defeat, but the instant in which pride, pain, and anger coexist in the same gaze.
The composition immediately strikes with its strong dynamism. The body is represented in a gathered, dramatic torsion, with broken arms that emphasize a sense of fragmentation and loss, turning what might appear as a mutilation into a powerful expressive choice. The figure seems to fold in on itself, restraining a force that still tries to break free.
The true focal point of the work is the face. The gaze, looking upward yet veiled by an intense inner shadow, manages to fuse two opposite emotions: a restrained, still living and proud anger, and a deep sadness, almost the awareness of its irreparable fall. It is an intense expression capable of involving the viewer and suggesting an inner conflict that goes beyond simple religious representation, becoming a universal symbol of pride, rebellion, and human fragility.
The anatomical rendering is notably high quality.
