The gorilla by Richard Orlinski is certainly one of the most iconic subjects of his artistic production, so much so that he has created three different versions of the animal: Thinker Kong, Wild Kong and Wild Kong Oil.
The gorilla as a subject in Richard Orlinski's works expresses the concept Born Wild that the artist pursues through the use of animals in his sculptures. In this way he explores the philosophical question of the difference between man and beast.
In the Thinker Kong sculpture, Richard Orlinski uses the most human of his animals to embody The Thinker in homage to Rodin. Unlike the animal’s excessively muscular build that contrasts with its reflective pose, in this work the artist minimizes the gorilla’s physical strength to focus on the reflective side.
In addition to showing this reflective side of the gorilla, Orlinski uses the animal to denounce the rampant pollution of our planet. It is in Wild Kong Oil that we note how the artist cares about environmental protection. In this version the gorilla throws a oil drum to underline how the animal tends to protect its territory and its species.
In Wild Kong, instead, Orlinski shows the invincible animal with its mouth open while it bares its terrifying teeth. The artist, however, makes us reflect on how this fierce beast is actually capable of tenderness, creating an allegory between the gorilla and man.
