Rödel turns almost entirely away from figurative painting in his final years of work. In a gradual transition, he dissolves the forms of his composition more and more into pure color values and reliefs.

The artist composes the surface as a fabric of differently sized color fields in earthy red and white. Through impasto application and brushwork, within the various color fields relief-like ridges and structures emerge.

In the 1.3 meter high field, at the top right, the silhouette of a bull appears, only on the second glance.

Bullfighting in Spain

The painting themes the bullfight in Pamplona, Spain. Rödel, who was also inspired by Hemingway, whom he first met in Pamplona in 1960, revisited this subject several times in his work.

The subdued, harmoniously blended colors form together a harmonious composition.

„From here, it's only a small step to that series of small-format works created around 1966, in which Rödel brings color to the fore alone. In these completely abstract pictures, he opts for the resonance of a particular color—red, blue or green, for example—and modifies it by refraining from any form of figuration and only relating fields in the same color family or in colors contrasting with each other. Tirelessly Rödel explores this painterly idiom of color."

Karl Rödel, after his death in 1982, left behind a substantial and multifaceted body of graphic and painterly works. He always regarded it in his paintings and graphics as a major challenge to combine artisanal skills with artistic intention.

Whether in his graphics or in the commissioned monumental works, Rödel's substantive and formal handling was always sensitively aligned to the respective framework conditions. This approach Rödel developed from the Bauhaus idea of Walter Gropius, whose core concept holds that a work of art should be accessed through craftsmanship and skill.
