Limited Edition Franklin Mint gimbal compass on a wooden pedestal, made from lacquered brass with glass, dating to the 1990s (approx. 1992), weighing 700 g and measuring 19 cm high, 14 cm wide with a 14 cm base, origin United States, in good condition.

For sale is a Limited Edition Franklin Mint Gimbal Compass on a wooden pedestal.
It was made as a Limited Edition in 1991 as part of the Franklin Mint collections official issue of the 'National Maritime Historical Society' to commemorate the 500th anniversary year in 1992 of America's Discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1492. The Gimbal compass was made along with other maritime instruments as part of a limited edition collection. The 'National Maritime Historical Society' was founded in the USA in 1963.
It is Precision crafted from solid brass, the decorative design is all engraved, the design was inspired by 15th century maritime gimbal compasses. It is designed as an ornament but also works as an instrument.
It is in Great condition: the brass is in excellent condition, in there are some light surface marks/ faint cleaning surface marks, there is a small patch of loss /chips to the stain/ varnish in an area around the brass name plate, there are some minor scratches/ marks on the bottom of the wooden base.

The compass needle moves freely and has been tested against other compasses and is working accurately. The gimbal movement is working as it should. The compass dial part is removable.
It Stands at: 19cm ( 7.5 inches) high/ tall & 14cm ( 5.5 inches) at its widest/ width. The Base diameter is: 14cm ( 5.5 inches).
The total Item weight is: 700g.
