Giuseppe Ghiringhelli

Giuseppe Ghiringhelli was born in Milan in 1874 and died in Varese in 1944. He trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, dedicating himself mainly to landscape and portrait, genres in which he developed a painting connected to the Lombard tradition between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
He first exhibited at the Milan Triennial in 1900 and later participated in several national exhibitions. In 1916 he also appeared at the Self-Portrait Exhibition promoted by the Milanese Artistic Family. His production shows attention to light rendering, the solidity of drawing, and a painting capable of uniting observation of reality with descriptive taste.

This painting by Giuseppe Ghiringhelli depicts a still life of game, with a hare and some birds hanging before a wooden surface. The composition recalls the taste of trompe-l’œil: the animals seem to be suspended directly on the wooden panel, with a physical presence and a depth effect accentuated by the close cropping.
In the center dominates the hare, rendered with particular attention to the softness of the fur, the warm reflections of the coat, and the natural position of the body. Beside it appears a game bird, probably a pheasant, recognizable by the brown plumage and long tail, while at the top another birds are glimpsed hanging, treated with darker tones.
The painting is carried out with good command of material and light. The browns of the wooden background, the deep shadows and the luminous effects on the animals create a compact yet strongly impactful image. Ghiringhelli emphasizes the tactile rendering of surfaces: the hare’s fur, the birds’ feathers, the wood of the background, and the shadowed areas are built with a soft and controlled brushwork.
The work fits into the tradition of hunting still life, a genre highly valued between the eighteenth and early twentieth centuries, where the subject of game becomes an opportunity to demonstrate technical skill, naturalistic precision, and luministic sensibility.
