Ay-O (靉嘔, born 1931, real name Takao Iijima) is one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary artists and a major figure of the international Fluxus movement. Internationally known as the “Rainbow Artist,” he developed a distinctive artistic style using vibrant spectral colors that became his signature. His works have been exhibited extensively throughout Europe, the United States, and Japan, and are included in the permanent collections of leading museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York. Today, Ay-O is regarded as one of the most important Japanese printmakers of the post-war era.

This is an original limited edition silkscreen print, “Phoenix II,” created in 1983 by internationally acclaimed Japanese contemporary artist Ay-O during the Showa Period (mid-20th century).

Ay-O, whose real name is Takao Iijima, is one of Japan’s most influential post-war artists and an internationally recognized member of the legendary Fluxus movement. Celebrated worldwide as the “Rainbow Artist,” he developed a unique artistic language based on the full spectrum of rainbow colors, creating works that convey optimism, harmony, and universal humanity.

“Phoenix II” is an outstanding example of this celebrated style. This impression is hand signed in pencil by the artist, dated ’83, and numbered 565/600, confirming it as an authentic limited edition published in 1983.
