Description

Obsession is an original oil painting on canvas belonging to the preparatory studies of Spleen et Idéal, a new painting project by NUSH Menna inspired by Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal.

The project starts from the idea of traversing some of Baudelaire's poems through contemporary painting. Each work originates from a different text without attempting to illustrate it literally: poetry acts as initial material and is transformed into visage, color, light, and presence.

In Obsession the portrait is built through successive layers and thin oil glazes. Particular attention is given to the eyes, the complexion, and the minimal passages of light that define the face. The most minute details are executed with very fine brushes.

The styling of the hair introduces a specific tactile element: some strands are painted using gold thread-colored paint, applied with the fine tip of the brush. The gold does not cover the surface but appears as lines, catching light differently depending on the viewing angle and creating a contrast with the depth of the darkest areas.

The title echoes the Baudelaire poem Obsession, where nature offers no consoling refuge: forests, sea, and night become presences that return man his own fears. In the painting this tension is transferred to the face. The gaze remains immobile, while the painted surface seems to be threaded by something that cannot find peace.

The project — Spleen et Idéal

Obsession constitutes one of the studies of a broader project in which NUSH Menna reinterprets through painting some of Charles Baudelaire's poems.

Each painting will be autonomous, yet linked to the others by the same origin: a poem from Les Fleurs du mal transported to the present through faces, bodies, and contemporary imagery.

These works form the initial studies in preparation for developing the series also on larger formats. For this reason each work preserves a double nature: a completed unique piece and a trace of the genesis of a new painting series.

The series is conceived as a coherent nucleus intended for private collection but also for potential gallery exhibitions.

Technique and authenticity

Original, unique work, entirely handmade by the artist in 2026.

Oil painting is built through stratifications, glazes, and interventions done with brushes of varying finesse. The surface is finished with a final protective varnish, applied to preserve the painting and its chromatic depth over time.

The work comes directly from the artist's studio and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by NUSH Menna.

Framing

The work is offered unframed.

Any frames, mats, and settings shown in the photographs serve only illustrative purposes to show possible display solutions.

If the winning bid significantly exceeds the reserve price, the artist may include a simple frame as a complimentary addition, chosen in harmony with the work.

Otherwise, the painting will be carefully protected and shipped rolled in a rigid tube, a solution that reduces the risk of damage during transport.

Shipping and notes

The work will be prepared with professional and careful packing. Whenever possible, recycled and recyclable materials will be used or reused to limit waste and the environmental impact of shipping.

The colors visible in photographs may differ slightly from the original work due to lighting conditions during shooting and the different technologies, calibrations, and monitor settings of computers, smartphones, and tablets.

The staged images are simulations created solely to suggest possible placements of the work. Frames, mats, furniture, and other elements shown in the settings are not included in the purchase unless otherwise indicated.

The proportions in staged images may appear slightly different from reality. For the actual dimensions, rely only on the measurements stated in this sheet: 30 × 40 cm.

Original unique work — NUSH Menna, 2026.

Seller's Story

My painting is born from the desire to explore the human being in contemporary time, between identity, symbols, and inner transformations. I do not simply paint what I see, but what I perceive behind the image: emotions, fragility, tensions, and contradictions that belong to our era. My work develops through a layered and slow oil technique, where every detail has a meaning and every element contributes to the narrative of the piece. The figures I paint do not represent merely individuals, but universal conditions: vulnerability, strength, loneliness, and the longing for connection. For me painting is an act of research and authenticity, a way to restore depth in a world dominated by speed and superficial image. Through color, light, and composition I seek to create works capable of maintaining a living relationship with those who observe them over time. My works are present in international private collections and are mainly created in oil on canvas, with a constant production and an artistic research in continual evolution. "ZEITGEISTTEPERAMENTLOS [SPIRITO - DEL - TEMPO - SENZA - SPIRITO] Riflesso di un attento "studium" travestito da distratto "punctum" - raccolta di ritratti senza identità - costellazione claustrofobica di tribù urbane - moltitudini solitarie - selfie ugualmente di sé massificati per te distratto - istantanee di un passato presente - colori forti per spiriti fragili - profonda superficialità - spirito - del - tempo - senza - spirito."
