An Indonesian ceremonial bronze axe
In the Indonesian archipelago ceremonial bronze axes were produced. Archaeological sites on Java, Bali, Sulawesi, the eastern islands and around Sentani Lake in Papua have been excavated. Here the bronze axes are found at the center of bronze production or in burial sites.
Most of the earliest bronze objects were probably used for ceremonies, such as highly stylized axes and drums. Various types of bronze axes have been discovered across Indonesia, for example numerous bronze axes with swallow-tailed sockets found on Java, the large axe with an anthropomorphic engraving, and such as the one with a curved bronze blade found in different sizes. The common features of these bronze axes are their artistically delicate patterns and their delicate fragile design, which point to ceremonial use.
This type of bronze axe was produced using the lost-wax method. This bronze axe was undoubtedly used ceremonially, but the exact nature of its use is unknown. It may have been used as a percussion instrument, or simply served as an heirloom object or status symbol at important ceremonies.
It comes with a custom-made iron stand on which the piece reaches a height of 19 cm.
