Exceptional charger (large presentation plate) in Japanese Kutani porcelain, made during the Meiji period (circa 1880-1900). Large chargers were intended to adorn prestigious homes and constituted true display pieces rather than mere tableware. This typology is particularly sought after by collectors of Japanese art.

This piece captivates with its entirely hand-painted decoration, richly enhanced with gold. The composition shows a pair of pheasants moving among majestic blooming peonies, pines, and a mountainous landscape treated with finesse. In Japanese tradition, pheasants symbolize nobility, prosperity, and conjugal harmony, while peonies embody wealth and happiness.

The border, of remarkable complexity, alternates geometric reserves and brocade motifs, bearing witness to the know-how of late 19th-century Japanese ateliers. The fine gold highlights emphasize every detail of the plumage and floral arrangements, offering a subtle relief that admirably catches the light.

The reverse features a red-painted mark with three characters, compatible with Kutani production of the Meiji period. The piece corresponds to high-quality export porcelain produced for the Western market at that time.
