Felice Giordano

Felice Giordano was born in Naples in 1880 and trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in his city. A central figure in his artistic maturation was Antonino Leto, a painter tied to the tradition of the School of Resina and to the experience of the Macchiaioli, from whom Giordano absorbed the attention to light, painterly matter, and the vivid rendering of the landscape.
During his career Giordano developed a painting largely tied to views and landscapes, with particular focus on Capri, Naples, Venice, and Paris. Alongside urban views and seascapes, he also produced marine still lifes and nocturnes, among the most recognizable subjects of his output.
He participated in exhibitions of the Società Promotrice Salvator Rosa of Naples and achieved national success as well, including a solo show at the Galleria Geri in Milan. His works are preserved in important public collections, including the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan and the Comune di Napoli. He died in Capri in 1964.

This broad view of Capri fully falls within Felice Giordano’s most appreciated production, tied to the island’s landscapes and to early twentieth-century Neapolitan and Caprese painting. The scene depicts a garden corner overlooking the sea, with the rocky profile of the island visible on the left and an interior-exterior space created through light walls, pergolas, climbing plants, and flowering pots.
The composition plays on a successful balance between architecture, vegetation, and the warm Mediterranean light. The central low wall, animated by flowers and leaves, separates the domestic space from the marine landscape, while on the right the table with the wine bottle (fiasco) and a few everyday objects introduce an intimate, lived-in note. The overall effect conveys the atmosphere of a Caprese terrace, suspended between the freshness of the garden and the luminous openness of the sea.
The brushwork is rapid and loose, built up in synthetic touches that define surfaces without stiffening them. The patches of light on the floor, the whites of the walls, the greens of the vegetation, and the blues of the sea create a luminous vibrancy typical of Giordano’s painting, always attentive to the atmospheric rendering of the landscape.
