Important wall relief in ceramic by Helmut Schäffenacker, depicting Virgo, a heavy, thick ceramic plaque approx. 25–26 cm square with deep incised glaze in ochre, yellow, brown, black and deep blue, attributed to the Ulm atelier and dating to the 1960s with caution, unglazed reverse for mounting and excellent condition overall.
Description from the seller
Important relief wall plaque representing the astrological sign of Virgo. The composition shows a seated female figure, treated in a modernist style very characteristic of German productions of the 1950s-1960s. The zodiac symbol of Virgo appears in the upper left part.
The plaque is made in thick and heavy ceramic, probably stoneware or chamotte clay. The decoration is deeply incised and glazed in ochre, yellow, brown, black and deep blue tones.
The reverse, unglazed, presents an integrated cavity allowing wall mounting. No signature or manufacturer's mark is visible. This model is attributed to the German workshop of Helmut Friedrich Schäffenacker, in Ulm, by comparison with identical documented specimens. The attribution and the age 1960 are therefore given with caution.
Approximate dimensions: 25 × 25 cm. Thick and heavy plaque.
Very good overall condition considering its age. Presence of a network of fine cracks in some glazed parts, in line with natural aging of the glaze. No damage.
Beautiful decorative object from the modernist period, likely to interest enthusiasts of German ceramics, 1960s design and zodiac representations.
