This type of vessel, traditionally used in affluent homes to house goldfish (symbols of abundance and wealth), is distinguished here by the quality of the enamel application in slight relief and by the delicacy of the plumage drawing and the peonies.
Made in hard-paste porcelain with a slightly celadon-tinted glaze, and decorated with polychrome Famille Rose enamels. The body is richly animated by a traditional birds-and-flowers scene (Huniǎo) depicting a pair of pheasants/phoenix perched on scholar rocks (Taihu), surrounded by blooming peonies in shades of pink, blue and white. The reverse bears butterflies and dragonflies in flight.
The upper neck presents a geometric frieze with a green and pink lattice motif, punctuated by stylized flowers. The flared rim is adorned with iron-red scrolls. The lower part is outlined by a belt of multicolored gadroon.
Condition: Generally good. Colors exceptionally fresh and vivid. Minor original firing imperfections (pinholes) and interior patina from handling. Chips.
