Constant Permeke (1886-1952) - Seascape at Sunset

Oil on panel, signed lower left "Permeke".

An expressive seascape with a glowing evening sky in ochre, green and red above a calm sea, against which two dark sailing ships silhouette against the horizon.

The loose, impasto brushwork and the muted, earthy color palette are characteristic of the early body of work of the Flemish Expressionist, known for his powerful interpretations of the Flemish coast.
