Robert Uldéric GERARD (1920) - Canal aux trois arches

Attractive oil on canvas by Belgian painter Robert Uldéric Gérard, an artist born in 1920 and mainly known for his urban landscapes, views of Brussels and representations of different Belgian locales. His production is characterized by figurative painting with free brushwork, luminous quality, and notable material richness.

The work depicts a picturesque urban view articulated around a three-arch stone bridge, beneath which a canal or river course of tranquil waters runs. Historical buildings rise in a stepped fashion toward the background, while a small boat moored in the foreground introduces a note of serenity and visually guides the eye toward the center of the composition.

Gérard organizes the landscape with a deep, balanced perspective. From a stylistic point of view, the work is framed within Belgian figurative landscape painting of the second half of the twentieth century, with Post-Impressionist influences. The artist employs free, quick, visible brushwork, through which he builds the façades, reflections and vegetation without resorting to overly meticulous description.

What stands out especially is the treatment of the pictorial matter, applied in certain zones with thick, impastoed brushstrokes. The reflections on the water are resolved with fragmented touches of white, greens, blues and grays, creating a vibrant surface that conveys the canal’s movement. In the architectures, ochers, ivories, grays and reddish tones generate a rich play of lights and volumes.

The palette is luminous and balanced, with predominance of soft earth tones animated by small chromatic accents. The direct, gestural brushwork adds freshness to the composition, while the combination of architecture, vegetation and water creates a scene of notable harmony.

The painting is signed “R. U. Gérard” in the lower left margin. The signature, urban theme and pictorial language are coherent with the artist’s known production, focused especially on landscapes and views of Belgian cities.

Due to the quality of its execution, the richness of its pictorial matter and the appeal of the scene depicted, it constitutes a very interesting work within Robert Uldéric Gérard’s landscape production, with notable artistic and decorative presence.
