A striking piece of East German mid-century glass art — sculptural, glossy, and hand-decorated with a single sweeping brushstroke of color across jet-black glass.

This 25 cm vase comes from VEB Kunstglas Arnstadt, the state-owned ("Volkseigener Betrieb") glassworks in Arnstadt, Thuringia, that became one of the DDR's best-known producers of Schwarzglas — deep black art glass — during the 1950s and 60s. At a time when ceramic vases dominated East German homes, Arnstadt's glassworks answered with these bold black-glass forms instead, hand-finished and hand-painted by in-house decorators — no two pieces from this era are ever quite identical, which is a large part of their appeal to collectors today.

The vase itself has a confident, pinched hourglass silhouette — flaring at the rim, cinched at the waist, widening again toward the base — that catches the light beautifully across its glossy black surface. Sweeping diagonally across the body is a hand-painted ribbon of colour: a curling line in white-edged powder blue with a fine red tip, crossed by a bright yellow brushstroke, and set off by two contrasting textured patches — a mossy speckled green and a warm speckled orange — that give the design a tactile, almost sponge-painted depth against the mirror-black glass. It's a wonderfully typical example of the atomic-age, abstract-expressionist decoration that defines the best DDR art glass of this period.
