Description from the seller

Set of illustrated Soviet reviews « Искорка » (“Iskorka”), 1926–1930
Avant-garde Soviet children's press

Rare set of 6 original issues of the Soviet children's magazine « Искорка » (“Little Spark”), published in Moscow by « Рабочая Москва » between 1926 and 1930.

The lot includes:

1 issue from 1926,
2 issues from 1927,
1 issue from 1928,
1 issue from 1929,
1 issue from 1930.

Drawings by Alexandre Deneika (1928, 1929)

These illustrated magazines constitute a remarkable testimony to the Soviet graphic aesthetics of the late 1920s, at the crossroads of constructivism, modernist illustration, and revolutionary pedagogy.

The covers feature dynamic typography and compositions characteristic of the Soviet avant-garde applied to children’s publishing:

iconography of the proletarian childhood,
modernist graphic games,
experimental layout,
countries typical of late NEP Soviet printing.

The Soviet youth periodicals of this era are today particularly sought after by collectors of:

Russian constructivism,
graphic design,
Soviet illustration,
historical avant-garde,
history of childhood and education.

Original period copies.
Paperback formats.
Overall condition good to very good considering the usual fragility of 1920s Soviet paper; minor wear, creases and traces of time in places.

Rare set and visually very striking."
