Oil on canvas, 46 × 55 cm, titled Le clocher dans la vallée, from Spain, a landscape by the Catalan post-impressionist school dating to circa 1940.
Description from the seller
Interesting oil on canvas belonging to the Catalan post-impressionist school of the 1940s, in which a rural landscape is depicted, anchored around a small nucleus of traditional architecture presided over by the tower of a church.
The composition shows a group of stone houses with tiled roofs, arranged on softly rising ground. The church, located in the central area, acts as the vertical axis of the scene and visually organizes the whole. Around it are trees, paths, walls and fields, elements that build a serene and recognizable image of the inland Catalan landscape.
From a stylistic point of view, the work is framed within Catalan post-impressionist landscape painting, characterized by a free interpretation of nature, the prominence of color, and a visible, constructive brushstroke. The artist does not seek meticulous description, but a synthesis of the surroundings through color masses, luminous contrasts and a solid compositional structure.
The palette combines greens, ochres, earth tones, blues and reddish hues, with special attention to the effects of light on the façades, the paths and the vegetation. The warm colors of the buildings and the terrain contrast with the greens in the foreground and with the bluish tones of the mountains, creating depth and balance.
The brushwork is loose, direct and, in some areas, slightly impastoed. It is especially expressive in the treatment of the trees, the fields and the paths, where the painted matter adds texture and movement. The buildings, though recognizable, are resolved through simplified shapes and planes of color, a technique typical in the modern landscape painting of the first half of the 20th century.
The composition shows affinities with the Catalan landscape tradition developed during the early decades of the 20th century, in which the rural environment becomes a subject for chromatic and structural experimentation. Influences of post-impressionism are perceived, with certain echoes of moderate Fauvism and Mediterranean painting, while maintaining an essentially figurative vision.
The work is signed in the lower right margin, although the exact reading of the signature presents some difficulty. For its painterly quality, its chromatic harmony and the appeal of its subject, it constitutes an interesting piece within Catalan landscape painting of the 1940s.
The canvas stretcher shows some small old holes compatible with the action of wood-boring insects, currently treated. No recent activity is evident.
The painting is presented unframed.
It is recommended to carefully inspect all photographs before bidding, as they form an essential part of the description and faithfully show the condition of the work and the stretcher.
