Le goût de la Méditerranée, an original oil on canvas by the Catalan school (c.1940), 47 × 56 cm, Spain, signed, framed, a still life depicting Mediterranean foods.
Description from the seller
Interesting oil on canvas attributed to the Catalan school of the 1940s, in which a striking still life of pronounced domestic and traditional character is depicted. The composition gathers various foods with a distinctly Mediterranean flavor —sausages, olives, and some anchovies arranged on a small plate—, creating a scene of great sobriety and notable visual strength.
The work is framed within the tradition of Catalan figurative still-life painting from the mid-20th century, a current in which direct observation of everyday objects is combined with an intimate sensibility and careful attention to luminosity values. The artist organizes the elements on a dark surface, generating a very effective contrast between the austere background and the illuminated objects.
The composition is resolved with balance and clarity. On the left appears a long piece of sausage, while in the right zone sits another piece cut, whose reddish interior provides one of the main chromatic focal points of the scene. In the foreground, the small plate with anchovies introduces a refined and delicate note, while in the background the paper cone with olives adds depth and helps to harmoniously close the whole.
From a technical point of view, the work presents a figurative approach of realist origin, with restrained but visible brushwork, especially in the modeling of the sausages and in the description of surface qualities. The treatment of light stands out, sliding over the skins, the white plate and the paper, creating subtle reflections and a quiet, almost gathered atmosphere.
The palette is dominated by earthy tones, reddish hues, dark greens and muted whites, in a sober yet highly effective chromatic combination. The intense reds of the sausage contrast with the dark background and with the greens of the olives, giving vibrancy to the composition without losing its austere character.
The work shows affinities with postwar Catalan painting, especially with those artists who cultivated the still life from a serene, refined and strongly compositional perspective. The interest in simple objects, the intimacy of the subject and the chromatic harmony make this piece a very attractive example of the genre.
The painting is presented framed. The frame will be shipped free of charge as a courtesy, with no commercial value, and its condition will not be a basis for complaint.
It is recommended to carefully view all photographs before bidding, as they are an essential part of the description and faithfully show the conservation state of the work and of the frame.
