This icon (in Amharic: አዶ or ādo) is an example of ecclesiastical craft from the 20th century. It is fully handmade. The icon has a book form and is made of wood, paper, linen and pigments. Refined and meticulously painted. The icon was acquired in situ and belonged to a student priest in the holy place Lalibela, Ethiopia.
From the fourth century Ethiopia has a Christian tradition. Within this tradition Ethiopian art was born. Ethiopian churches are decorated with wall inscriptions and icons. In addition, sacred scriptures are decorated with miniatures. Illiterate believers gained access to the stories of the Bible through pictorial representations. The depiction of the story takes priority in terms of significance. Therefore, depictions were more focused on the expressiveness of the story than on a realistic rendering. Later in the development of Ethiopian painting, details received more attention and depictions sometimes became more realistic.
