Devotional Altar with Madonna and Child
France (attributed), early 20th century | Neo-Gothic style
Suggestive wall devotional altar in carved and painted wood, attributed to French production of the early years of the 20th century, realized in an elegant Neo-Gothic style.
The structure, finely worked with ogival arches, spires and pierced motifs, is embellished by doors that open and are decorated with gilded filigree. In the center it houses a delicate depiction of the Madonna and Child, painted with a warm-toned palette and enriched with refined details, intended for private devotion.
These altars were placed in homes as places of domestic prayer and today represent interesting testimonies of European popular religiosity, as well as being sought after by collectors of sacred art.
