Item Description
This is a round Japanese lacquerware kogo (incense container), traditionally used in the tea ceremony to hold incense. The lid is finished in deep black lacquer and decorated with a hand-painted red hibiscus flower with green leaves, rendered in a carved-and-painted maki-e style technique. The interior and base are finished in plain glossy black lacquer.
The piece is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), the lid of which bears a brush-written inscription and two red seal stamps, indicating the piece was kept as part of a considered tea utensil collection.
The kogo is compact and lightweight, designed to sit comfortably in the hand, and displays the fine lacquer craftsmanship typical of Japanese incense containers made for tea gatherings.

The lacquer surface shows light general wear and fine surface scratches consistent with age and gentle use, most visible under angled light. The hibiscus decoration on the lid remains bright and well preserved. The accompanying wooden box shows natural aging to the wood but is structurally intact.
