AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Spanish School - Still Life, presumably 18th or 19th century
A classic bodegón with a dark background

Luxuriant bouquet of flowers in a glass vase, surrounded by southern fruits: pears, grapes, plums, apples, a honeydew, tomatoes and others.
A Chinese ceramic vessel with lid as well as a Spanish fan complete the ensemble.
The richly stocked still life was arranged on a very elaborately executed tablecloth with lace edging.
One can understand the painting as an allegory of summer but also classically as a vanitas motif: the reminder of the transience of all earthly things, the fleetingness of life and the inescapability of death (Memento Mori).
The fruits stand for sweet abundance and the pleasures of earthly existence; the fan and the Chinese clay pot for luxury and wealth. In Spain’s deeply religious Baroque culture, this type of still life also signifies a call to humility: man should not fix his attention on the transitory joys of the world, but on eternal soul salvation.
Flowers: roses, carnations, geraniums, daisies, fuchsias, and others.
Beautiful light-dark contrasts, vivid colors.
