Yves Ganne (1931-2019) - Visage expressionniste

We present this very poignant drawing in ink and wash depicting an expressionist face by Yves Ganne (1931–2019).

The composition reveals a frontal face with stylized features — rectangular eyes, a T-shaped nose, black hair in a swirling mass — emerging from a dark, dense wash-treated background. The power of this portrait evokes a primitive mask, between expressionism and brut art, reinforced by the melancholic poem inscribed on the back of the artist's hand, evoking lost time and withered tears. The work is signed and dated 1949 at the bottom right.

YVES GANNE (Nantes 1931-2019)

Yves Ganne was born in Angers on July 13, 1931. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, which he joined in 1946. In 1950 he moved to Paris to join Fernand Léger's studio.

He also received two major distinctions in 1950: the Prize for Young Painting and the City of Menton Prize.

His talent was recognized by institutions as early as 1951; two of his paintings were acquired by the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris.

He regularly exhibited in Paris, notably at Galerie Drouant-David (1954, 1958) and more recently at Galerie Francis Barlier in Paris and Honfleur (1994, 2003, 2004). He also exhibited with the greatest, notably in 1954 with Bernard Buffet at Galerie Visconti.

His work transcends French borders. As early as 1956, he was exhibited at Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery in London. His work was also shown in the United States: at Cushman Gallery in Houston (1959), at Van Diemen Lilienfeld Gallery in New York (1966), then at Dalzell-Hatfield Gallery in Los Angeles (1968). In Sweden, he was welcomed at Borstahusens Konstforening Gallery in Landskrona Konsthall (1975).

Yves Ganne participated in numerous group exhibitions: the Salon de la Jeune Peinture, the Salon de l’École de Paris at Galerie Charpentier (from 1954), the Salon des Peintres Témoins de Leur Temps (1956), or the first Paris Biennale in 1959.

His style, deeply rooted in the French figurative tradition, is distinguished by a personal vision of still life, female portrait, and scenes of daily life. He avoids any academicism by favoring a sensitive and balanced expression, where color plays a central role.

From 1965 he produced more than 250 original lithographic editions, distributed in France, the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and Japan.

His works are today represented in prestigious public collections in France, notably at the Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, as well as internationally in museums such as Cincinnati (Ohio), Seattle (Washington), or Edinburgh in Scotland.
